Culture and Psychiatry

Abstract
In this article which prepared for the lecture to psychiatric residents, the author emphasized the importance of cultural psychiatry in psychiatric training.
The bio-psycho-social approach has been stressed in the genesis and treatment of psychiatric disorders. But unfortunately, recent trend of psychiatric research and treatment substantially ignores 'the psycho-social'. A single axis of biological approach and pharmacotherapy has it's limitation for understanding and helping the patients' real and deep problem. Without knowledge and attitude to understand patients' cultural background and behavior, successful treatment of patients can be hardly expected.
This lecture tried to infuse interest in cultural psychiatry into the residents with eight questions raised in clinical situation.
1. What kind of area of psychiatry are you interested in?
2. Can you understand your patients' deep problem with brain cell or molecule?
3. Can you help your patients solely with drugs?
4. How much do you understand th problem or deep conflict of patients who soaked into traditional value system?
5. Can you successfully understand and help patients of your country with your knowledge learned from your training?
6. Can you successfully understand and help patients with other cultural background?
7. Do you have interest in and seriously consider culture and society of your country in relation to mental health?
8. Have you ever considered psychiatrist's identity in the future?
